  • Novum collaborated with HOK and JE Dunn Construction to create their vision through our Designer Assist Process to deliver this dramatic façade for the Black and Veatch Headquarters in Overland Park, KS. The team's original goal for transparency included a Glass Fin concept; however, the Glass Fin proved to be too expensive for the façade’s established budget in early Design Development. Understanding the design and budget goals allowed us to develop another potential solution for the team's consideration. Through our collaborative Designer Assist Process, a concept that included Architectural Exposed Structural Steel (AESS) with an Advanced Fabricated Steel shape and Novum's Edge Clamped Glass (ECG) with Toggle was the selected solution.

The design included a green roof that added complexity to the loading and concept goals for the façade. Working in partnership with the design team, we were able to establish a "T" shaped vertical steel element. To do so, it required attaching the IGU to the structure with Novum's ECG/Toggle. Hanging the steel structure enabled the team to develop a slender "T" shape that was only 6" in depth. The General Contractor initially looked to purchase all of the glazing in a single package, which added a significant amount to the concept's structural glazing element. Throughout the process, we were able to share potential savings by benefiting from our in-house services that included engineering, fabrication, and installation. The owner benefited from this procurement process by saving money and time and the architect was able to get a concept they wanted without sacrificing their design goals for the solution.

We are proud to have worked with the design and contactor teams in developing a solution that met design and budget goals for this unique project. Our capabilities and understanding of the project goals allowed us to bring value to the design team, General Contractor, and ultimately the owner. This beautiful façade was a result of a great team and a willingness to trust in a Designer Assist process with a tremendous history of success. "JE Dunn partnered with Novum Structures to develop a technical façade solution that delivered the design intent of Black & Veatch while meeting its targeted budget goals. We were very impressed with the outcome and would highly recommend Novum Structures for any speciality glazing elements on your next projects." – Eric Floyd, LEED AP | Vice President - JE Dunn Construction
